Back to Project Updates
Reporting Period
8 August - 19 September 2013
Purpose
This Status Report is used to provide the Project Panel with a summary of the status of work in the project.
Status Summary
The CeD3 Estimates paper was presented to the CEnet Board recommending acceptance by the Board out of session. There were three briefings held with Board members and the Board approved the recommendations. The estimates were used to make a provision in the budget for 2013/2014 and this was presented to the Board at its meeting on 18 September 2013.
The Team has been compiling the data information received in the consultations and mapping that against the reports requested and prioritised. The prioritised reports are also being specified in detail.
Doug, John K, Jeff and Kevin met with the CECNSW to discuss data held by CEC and also the identity management and the possibility of SSO across some relevant CEC systems. Formal communications will need to go the the CEC to progress this discussion.
The Team has visited the Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) offices on 6 September to view in more detail the technical aspects of the BCE BI system. There are some potential advantages to be had from using the data warehouse database structure and a request has been made to the Executive Director to gain access.
Specialised BI and data warehouse company CSC was interviewed by Team members and has been engaged to commence the work on the database design and build. The initial workshop is scheduled for 19 September.
The DBMS components have been ordered and the delivery is expected on 25 September. Some components have already arrived. This will tie in well with the design and build work about to commence.
The Team will focus on the design and build of the database and the ETL before moving to RFQ for the BI layer. The BCE system will also be considered as well.

(To be completed during the next period)
Project and Stage Tolerance Status
The project is tracking on schedule at present and within budget. There is no requirement to conduct an RFQ as only a limited number of systems are suitable, so we will move to an RFQ, if needed, once DBMS work is completed. This change will save time in the project schedule. The budget was approved by Board on 18 September 2013.
Requests for Change
Key Issues and Risks
(Summary of actual or potential problems and risks)
The main risk is the appropriate design of the DBMS. This will be mitigated by a review of the BCE database that is successful for their BI tools producing the same type of reports CED3 will need to do. Additional the engagement of CSC expertise will provide further surety.
Lessons Report (if appropriate)
(A review of what went well, what went badly, and any recommendations for corporate or programme management consideration)
Processing of the estimates paper and related DBMS purchase was a lengthy and resource consuming exercise. The levels of project governance need to be reviewed to simplify the process and management. Additionally the project initiation process needs to be reviewed so that some budgetary estimates are available before the project commences.
